Codes (California)

The California Codes are the body of statutory law passed by the California Legislature. They are organized into 29 codes by topic. For California civil litigation and business disputes, a handful of these codes do most of the work.

Codes Most Relevant to California Business Litigation
- Code of Civil Procedure (CCP) — civil procedure, statutes of limitation, service, discovery, motions, judgments, appeals, and enforcement
- Civil Code (CIV) — contracts, obligations, real property, fraud, agency, damages, and consumer protection statutes
- Business and Professions Code (B&PC) — including the Unfair Competition Law (B&P 17200) and the False Advertising Law (B&P 17500)
- Corporations Code (CORP) — corporations, partnerships, LLCs, fiduciary duties, derivative actions
- Commercial Code (COM) — California's adoption of the Uniform Commercial Code (UCC), covering sales of goods, secured transactions, and negotiable instruments
- Labor Code (LAB) — wage and hour, classification, retaliation, PAGA, and Cal/OSHA
- Penal Code (PEN) — including Penal Code § 502 (computer fraud), often relevant to insider data theft and trade-secret cases
